Before the development can start \u2013 part 1<\/h2>\n

An IoT project starts with a problem. For example, the customer has an industry-specific requirement for which there is not yet a standardized solution or wants to break new ground. After initial discussions, it makes sense to record the required parameters in a specification sheet \u2013 so far a quite classic approach.<\/p>\n

From here on, however, there is usually a lot more to consider in IoT projects than in other developments. From the hardware (logic) to the website, everything is connected, and it requires “systemic thinking” and an agile approach. In the process, it must be possible to allow different ideas, to try them out and, if necessary, to discard or modify them.<\/p>\n

The developer team must clarify a whole range of issues with the customer and\/or other industry insiders before they can start development. Thus, depending on the industry, different stakeholders (users, uninvolved parties, technicians, etc.) with very different prior knowledge and requirements come into play for IoT solutions. Local conditions strongly determine the technology that can be deployed. In addition, it is crucial for business success which business model is chosen. For example, components, integration and\/or data can be sold. In the following, I would like to briefly highlight the individual points.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Industry-specific requirements<\/h3>\n

IoT projects include sensor and control components, a network connection (for example to the cloud), and a user environment, such as a dashboard that can be operated via an internet browser or app. On-site systems must function in adverse conditions in some industries. For example, industrial buildings or outdoor locations are often subject to dirt, dust, humidity or large temperature differences. Locations with thick walls as well as underground spaces or temporary and mobile facilities only allow certain network connections. In harsh working conditions, it is important that the individual components are designed to be robust and vandal-proof and, above all, that they do not get in the way. Here, the developer team must carefully research and consider all circumstances – the environment determines what technology can be used.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Stakeholders and their needs\/usability<\/h3>\n

The people who will have to deal with the IoT solution in the future are also important. What requirements do they have for the system? IT technicians are rarely on site to set up network connections or troubleshoot. For this reason, IoT solutions almost always need to be plug & play as well as secure by design. User interfaces are ideally self-explanatory and provide exactly (only) the data needed by the respective user. This requires sophisticated rights management so as not to overburden users and, last but not least, to meet data protection requirements.<\/p>\n

In advance, the developer team should clarify with the customer which data he wants to use, which data should be stored (and if necessary overwritten or deleted). More is not always more here; rather, the right data in an understandable presentation is important. In IoT projects, this is particularly important because the data is often a chargeable product and therefore critical to the business.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Business model and pricing<\/h3>\n

Fundamental to any IoT project is the business model, and the developer team should ask themselves (and more importantly, the customer) a few questions up front. What is the customer willing to pay for? Will he pay for the components and\/or the integration? Is it a one-time investment or will there be a regular service fee? Does the package include support services or software updates? At what point and under what conditions do the potentially expensive systems pay for themselves? What benefits must the customer generate for the solution to be profitable for him? Or perhaps he gets the modules free of charge in addition to a customized data package for which a charge is made? Many variants are possible here and depend on the industry, the requirements and the stakeholders for each IoT project.<\/p>\n
